The Union Pacific railroad was constantly in search of more powerful locomotives to pull it’s long and heavy freight trains through the heavily graded mountain passes of the Rockies. One answer to that search was the articulated locomotive known as “Big Boy”. With a wheel arrangement of 4-8-8-4, “Big Boy” was one of the largest and most powerful steam locomotives ever built.
